ROSE BOWL LEGENDS

Ron Vanderkelen

Ron Vanderkelen never had much of a pro career, working as a backup to Fran Tarkenton with the Minnesota Vikings for a few years. At Wisconsin, however, the scrambling Ron Vanderkelen was a Tarkenton playalike and had one of his finest games in the first matchup of No. 1 and No. 2 teams since the Associated Press poll began in 1936.

Southern California, the national champions, raced out to a 42-14 lead behind quarterback Pete Beathard, who threw four touchdown passes. Vanderkelen, however, got hot in the fourth quarter when the No. 2 Badgers stormed back with 23 unanswered points, only to run out of time.

Before a breathless crowd of 98,698, the two teams set a Rose Bowl scoring record, and Vanderkelen claimed another mark by throwing for 401 yards while completing 33 of 48 passes. His favorite target was Pat Richter, who later became athletic director at Wisconsin; he had 11 catches for 163 yards.

The late Jim Murray wrote, "But for everyone who was there that day, the lasting image is of Ron Vanderkelen filling the murky air with footballs while USC seemed to be running around looking for a bed to hide under."

A game that looked like an early rout remains perhaps the most exciting Rose Bowl of all time.
