ROSE BOWL LEGENDS

Howard Jones

Although he spent his early years of coaching in the East and Midwest, Jones became best known for turning the University of Southern California into a national power, beginning in 1925. He was nicknamed the "King of the Rose Bowl" because five of his teams played in the bowl and all of them won.

Jones played end at Yale and coached Syracuse to a 6-3-1 record after graduating in 1908. He returned to Yale for one season, producing a 9-0-0 team that didn't give up a single point, and then coached Ohio State to a 6-1-3 mark in 1910.

After the 1910 season, Jones went into business. He interrupted that career to coach Yale to a 5-2-3 record in 1913 and he left business for good in 1916 to concentrate on coaching at the University of Iowa.

Jones had unbeaten teams in 1921 and 1922; his 1921 team ended Notre Dame's 21-game unbeaten streak with a 10-7 victory. In eight seasons, Iowa won 42 games while losing 17. Jones went to Southern California in 1925.

Until his arrival, the school had played almost exclusively against West Coast teams. Jones changed that, adding rivals such as Iowa, Notre Dame, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Pittsburgh, and Georgia to the schedule over the years.

He remained at Southern Cal until his death of a heart attack after the 1940 season. The 1928 team was undefeated, with 1 tie in 10 games, and the 1932 team won all nine of its regular season games. The Trojans beat four different teams in their five Rose Bowl victories: Pittsburgh, 47-14, in 1930; Tulane, 21-12, in 1932; Pittsburgh, 35-0, in 1933; Duke, 7-3, in 1939; and Tennessee, 14-0, in 1940.

Jones's record in 16 seasons at Southern Cal was 121-36-13. Overall, his teams won 194 games, lost 64, and had 21 ties, a .733 winning percentage. His younger brother, Tad, also played at Yale and was a successful college coach.
