LEGENDS Cliff MontgomeryCliff Montgomery (September 17, 1910 – April 21, 2005) was the captain of the Columbia University Lions college football team that won the 1934 Game. Montgomery threw the pass, a trick play known as KF-79, that led to Columbia's 7-0 upset over Stanford University. "The game stood out more than any other game," said Montgomery, who was named the most valuable player of the game. "We were an underdog, in fact an 18-point underdog. Nobody thought we had a chance." It was widely regarded as one of the greatest athletic upsets of the twentieth century and Montgomery was named the game's Most Valuable Player. He went on to play for one season with the National Football League Brooklyn Dodgers. Montgomery's Columbia varsity teams lost just three games in three years. Quarterback was a much different position at the time, since Little played a single-wing offense and the "kicking back," as the coach called the position, was expected to do a little bit of everything — running, passing and kicking. Field position was prized in those days, and teams often would punt on second or third down. After one season playing professional football with the Brooklyn Dodgers (yes, there was a Dodgers football team in those days, and like the baseball team it played at Ebbets Field), Montgomery worked for the W. R. Grace steamship company. Montgomery served with the United States Navy during World War II. He earned the Silver Star during the 1945 invasion of Okinawa, credited with saving the lives of 400 sailors on April 6, 1945 when he navigated his flagship alongside a burning destroyer in rough seas. An executive at McGraw Hill, Montgomery spent 25 years as a college football official and earned a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame. Elected to the National Football Hall of Fame in 1963, he is retired and living in Roslyn Heights, N.Y. A 90th birthday party was held in his honor on Sept. 7 at the nearby Meadowbrook Club in Jericho, N.Y. He met seven United States Presidents and appeared in a "Got Milk?" advertisement. |
