Chalmers "Bump" Elliott

Called the greatest right halfback he ever saw by his Coach, Fritz Crisler, Bump starred both on offense and defense during the early platoon days at Michigan.
Returned from overseas service with the Marines in 1946, he climbed immediately to stardom.

In 1947 he led the Big Nine in scoring with 54 points and was chosen the Most Valuable Player in the Conference to win the Chicago Tribune Trophy.

He became head coach at Michigan in 1959, after serving as assistant at Oregon State, Iowa and his Alma Mater. His 1964 team won the Big Ten and titles.

His final team in 1968 was arguably the most successful, going 8-2, but the final game against Ohio State was a blowout loss, in which Ohio State coach Woody Hayes made his famed quote that he went for two after the Buckeyes' final touchdown because he couldn't go for three.

Bump also earned letters in football, basketball and baseball at Purdue during Marine trainee days.
